Allen + Clarke was commissioned by Kahungunu Health Services Charitable Trust (Choices), a 30 year health and community services provider in Hawke’s Bay to conduct an organisational review. Our approach centred around
· Our values-centred analysis showed that supporting whānau is central to Choices’ impact in their community.
· Our three-phased approach gathered comprehensive insights from kaimahi at all levels, creating a balanced picture of strengths and opportunities.
· Delivering targeted recommendations across four areas, giving Choices a clear pathway to enhance their organisation in line with their kaupapa Māori approach and to ensure future sustainability.
Kahungunu Health Services Charitable Trust (Choices) has made a powerful impact in Hawke's Bay for over three decades. With 65 team members delivering primary health, social support and reintegration services, they've become a trusted community provider.
The review aimed to help them achieve sustainable contracts, providing security for their team and ensuring continued service delivery for future generations.
We adopted a three-phased approach which was designed to centre Choices' values. This approach captured diverse insights for the organisation, while maintaining a focus on their kaupapa and core values.
Listen and learn - we conducted two group workshop and eight one-to-one kōrero with kaimahi and managers to discuss what worked well and identify improvement opportunities.
Analyse - we applied a framework centred around Choices' organisational values to explore key themes.
Share - we presented back to the organisation our findings about what was working well and delivered high-level recommendations for improvement.

Our review provided Choices with actionable insights across four key areas. The participants found it affirming, revealing strong support for the organisation and its kaupapa.
Values and purpose - despite strong commitment to support whānau, there was an opportunity to more clearly articulate the organisation's values, incorporating these values into external and internal communication activities and materials.
Kaimahi experience - kaimahi showed deep commitment but could be further supported by training guidelines, implementing structured performance reviews, creating clearer career pathways, and standardising documentation templates.
Leadership and Governance - we heard that kaimahi wanted more interaction with leadership. We recommended reviewing leadership job descriptions, developing feedback mechanisms, improving risk management approaches and creating an organisation-wide strategic plan.
Communications - we identified opportunities for more consistent and timely communications. We recommended developing communications maps, creating an online learning hub, organising annual celebration events, reviewing induction processes, establishing an e-pānui and incorporating regular team building activities.
